The Heart of the Great Alone

If you still haven't visited the superb - and deeply moving - exhibition of pictures of Captain Scott's ill-fated journey to the South Pole, taken by Herbert Ponting and members of Scott's team, do so now.

A hundred years old, Ponting's images, are simply unbelievable. Very beutifully framed, but ultimately tragic.

There are also equally great, although different in nature, images by Frank Hurley, taken during Ernest Shackleton's Polar expedition which began in 1914.

Very moving and very inspiring, particularly when you realise what equipment - and how much of it - was needed to capture these photographs in such harsh conditions.

The exibition runs until mid-April at The Queen's Gallery in London.

From a marketing email I have just received.

I knew it! I knew it!

Is this a spin-off the BBC kept secret until today?!

"Forget about all the cute polar bear cubs and adorable penguins we've been showing you. Spare a thought for this poor begonia."

The Evening Standard made me chuckle tonight...
